London - Monday September 3rd to Wednesday September 5th

Monday 3rd September - Today was supposed to be a leisurely day of checking out the Salisbury Cathedral and then the Old Sarum before the relatively "easy" drive onto London. The morning started to go well with a short drive down the road to the cathedral. On finishing there it was back the car to program the GPS to take us to Old Sarum. Well GPS gods soon put an end to those plans when the GPS unit died. AGH!. No worries says I, just call Avis in Salisbury and and get them to get us another one. (Did I mention that mobile phone reception is Salisbury is near non existent and we had to return to the hotel to enlist their services to call Avis). Sorry says the Avis man but we don't have a branch in Salisbury but we will be more than happy to replace the unit if you can find your way to the branch at Southampton airport. And how do we manage to find our way to Southampton airport with out A GPS you may ask. Well Katie at the Rose and Crown Hotel in Salisbury was a gem and printed off some directions. Now - picture this - me as pissed off as I can be and Phil telling me the directions from the printout. I was sure the was going to be another Klagenfurt ! - Well it worked out OK, well sort of OK, if you ignore the traffic chaos we caused by turning into a restricted zone at the at Southampton airport. Anyway after about 4 hours of wasted time we got the replacement unit and were on our way down the M3 to London.

I was very proud of myself managing to get into the city without any incidents.

Even with working GPS it was a challenge.

Tuesday  4th September - Laundry this morning then onto the tube to Greenwich to see the Old Royal Naval College, the Royal Observatory and the Cutty Sark. And what a beaut day it was too sunny and about 24 so we took the boat back to Waterloo.

Wednesday  5th September - Today it was on the tube to North Greenwich to take the new Emirates Airway across the river. Then onto the Light Rail back into town to check out St Pauls followed by a stroll around Covent Garden and a late lunch. We were knackered after St Pauls. The 557 steps to the top of the dome was a bit too much.
